Its the birthday of Christopher Cockerell, who was born in 1910 in Cambridge, England. Cockerell studied engineering at Cambridge University and became an electrical engineer at Marconi. In the 1950s he founded his own company, where he invented the first practical hovercraft. Unlike previous designs, Cockerells prototype featured a narrow jet that skirted the perimeter of the craft to create a wall of moving air, trapping air beneath the rest of the craft. That innovation meant that a cushion of high-pressure air could be maintained by a modest-sized engine. Hovercraft are used throughout the world. The largest, the Russian military Zubr-class (shown here), weighs 500 tons, is 60 meters long and carries 16 missiles.
