It’s A Wonderful Life? My favorite Christmas movie is ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’. I can not begin to count the number of times I’ve watched it – and like most folks, I almost know it word for word. And yet, no matter how many times I’ve seen it, I still hang on every word, and no matter how many times I hear Look, Daddy. Teacher says, Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings’” I get all choked up. In all my years of enjoying this movie, I’ve always assumed that everybody watching it, everybody that has seen it, was having similar reactions, common feelings, emotions filled with love, hope, community spirit and goodness. You know, the things that make Christmas Christmas. But then I turn on the news. I look at the results of this last election. I listen to conversations in airports and coffee shops and I now realize that a large number in the audience are probably secretly cheering for Mr. Potter instead of George Bailey. Could I possibly be a conservative? Maybe - if....... If I could convince myself that government has no business getting involved in the security of our senior citizens, if I could believe that the health of our citizens is of no concern of the government, if I could accept that higher education should be reserved for only those whose parents can afford to buy it for them, if I could accept the myth that providing tax breaks and subsidies to the mega-rich and to the most profitable corporations will somehow benefit the lower income citizens, if I believe that only the mega-rich should own homes, if I could learn to be comfortable with the idea that only societies preferred members deserve to vote, if I could somehow reconcile the idea that government should stay out markets, yet control gas prices, that the government should not regulate financial organizations, or worker safety or public safety or pollution. If I could have more faith in all these, and a few other fairy tales, then, yes, maybe I could be a Mr. Potter, er, I mean a republican. But I prefer to live like George Bailey. youtu.be/swZYMIdWMa4
