It’s amazing how you can drive through a town day after day and miss out on the things all around you. Like that park you never knew existed even though you drive by it every week. Or that business front you just assumed was still closed, but got a new tenant in more than a month ago. In this case, I found myself driving on Pearman Dairy Road and realized I never had been on the side of that road heading toward U.S. 76. I had been around Westside High School and the Wal-Mart a dozen or so times but had not taken the time to hit the other side of this road. The fact is, I hardly ever get over that way because, honestly, I just don’t think about it. But one day, I decided it was time to see who had gone into the restaurant space where Staton’s Diner used to be. And I’m glad I did because I found another Mexican restaurant in town that I had no idea existed. And, surprise, it has been serving up classic Mexican meals for the past two years. El Jimador takes the wise road as soon as you pull up to the restaurant by advertising 99-cent draft beer on its huge sign. Pulling into the parking lot on Pearman Dairy, the flow of traffic requires a one-way loop around the building, so if you want to cut down on pulling out time, go around the restaurant and park on the left side. Just a tip from someone who learned the hard way. Inside, you will be greeted by some of the nicest staff you have seen in restaurants. They are excited to see you and, from the get-go, try to make your experience there a pleasant one. From getting your drinks as soon as they seat you to bringing out a basket of chips, salsa and dip, you feel like you are a welcome guest right from the start. Of course, you will need those chips and the salsa because the menu at El Jimador is gargantuan. It includes just about everything you have ever eaten at a Mexican restaurant and a few more just for good measure. At lunch, hit the specials. There are more than three dozen specials that offer everything from a chili relleno and taco to shrimp chimichanga and guacamole salad. There are also burritos, quesadillas, lunch fajitas, pollo fundido and taquitos. The prices on lunch specials range from $4.25 to $7 and each couple probably feed an army. So, what do the other specialties on the menu look like? Well, pretty impressive. You can have the Cazuelon, featuring carne asada and chicken breast cooked with chorizo. Or the Quesadilla Hawaiiana filled with chicken, Mexican sausage, onions and pineapple. Then there is the Tres Amigos with three different burritos on one plate, the Chori Pollo with sliced chicken and chorizo and the Chiles Pablanos of stuffed peppers served with rice and beans. Whew! But that is just a fraction of what the restaurant has to offer. It offers two dozen beef and chicken dishes, another two dozen chicken dishes, several shrimp and pork dishes and a huge vegetarian menu. It’s combinations are built to fill you up offering tacos, enchiladas, chalupas, chile rellenos, tostaguac or quesadillas in a variety of combinations with most at $7.75 and others ranging from $8 to $10.50. This doesn’t even count the nachos menu, the fajitas menu, the appetizers and the salads. Oh, and the massive tequila selection for every type of margarita or shot you could want. El Jimador is at 1711 Pearman Dairy Road in Anderson. It is open from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. seven days a week and can be contacted at 864.226.0616.
