It’s great to be in Tenterfield today. I appreciated the opportunity to address the councillors on topics like the Bolivia Hill re-alignment and the Tenterfield bypass with full or part funding in place for these projects. We’ll continue to work finding funding on the Legume to Woodenbong Road project. It’s an important route between the Darling Downs and the meat processors at Casino. I also had the opportunity to catch up with Dan Ford of Bald Rock Beef Jerky Company. Dan has built up his business from the ground and won an Agribusiness award at the Northern Inland Innovation Awards hosted by Regional Development Australia. I also had a look around the Tenterfield Saddler, a display of fantastic artifacts of our pioneering days. Tenterfield Mayor Peter Petty told me that Banjo Patterson was married at St Stephens Presbyterian Church to Alice Walker, whose family owned Tenterfield Station at the time. The Banjo and his bride had their wedding breakfast at Tenterfield Station before catching the train back to Sydney. It was during that train trip he wrote the poem to his bride: “As Long As Your Eyes Are Blue”. Another fascinating historical fact about Tenterfield is that Harry Chauvel claimed Tabulum Station as home and was part of the guard of honour when the Tenterfield Railway Station was opened in February 1886. Chauvel served his country with distinction during the Boer and First World Wars. He commanded the famous charge on the Beersheba Wells in Palestine.
