It’s not exactly news. Southern Democrats have become an endangered species and Landrieu didn’t do herself any favors by calling southern voters racist. Her runoff campaign was dead in the water because white voters had turned on her. Working class white voters dumped the Democrats. No one except the Humane Society was willing to spend money on her campaign and now the voters have put her out of her misery. Landrieu ran a loud and confused runoff campaign that was heavy on personal attacks and low on reasons for voters to support her. Running on personal attacks when the voters have turned against you and you’re low on money is a desperation strategy and that’s all that she had to work with. The failed Keystone vote was her last best hope of convincing voters that a Democrat could still deliver for them. And her own Senate Dems shot her in the back and chose to protect Obama from a veto over Landrieu. If 2014 had been less devastating for Dems, the party might have fought to protect her seat, but they wrote her off once the damage was in and fell into squabbling over the party agenda. While the Dems argued over how to reclaim the middle class and appeal to working class white voters, the S.S. Landrieu went down in the waters of the Louisiana Gulf Coast.
