It’s the beginning of summer, yet to millions of outdoors men - TopicsExpress

It’s the beginning of summer, yet to millions of outdoors men and women the thoughts are already turning to hunting the Kings of Fall. Deer hunting is not only a tradition for many families, if you are lucky it also supplies a nice helping of healthy meat in the freezer. Unfortunately in pursuit of our passion, a handful of preventable accidents happen every year. So with this in mind, here are a few things we can do to protect ourselves. 1. If you are hanging lock on or ladder stands, always….”ALWAYS” take someone with you to help. All it takes is a slip, a dropped ratchet strap, or any number of things that can go wrong to not only end your season early, it could also end your life. 2. Print out a topo map of the area you are hunting, or have one saved to your computer. At each of your stand sites use a different color marker and number each site on that map. Then just leave your family a note before you leave for the woods, saying I am going to be at #4 or where ever you will be that day. If you get hurt and cannot make it home, that lets them know exactly where you are, and will get help to you in a timely manner. 3. Kick the mud off of your boots before climbing a ladder or screw in steps. I can tell you from experience that muddy boots climbing up those steps can be a very dangerous practice. Many years ago I almost got hurt very badly because I didn’t take time to clean my boots before climbing. Doing a chin up on those screw in steps with nothing below your feet sucks!!!! 4. Never, ever climb into a stand while holding your bow. I cannot tell you how many times I have watched someone climb up steps or a ladder with their bow in their hand. I myself have been guilty of that. Guys get a rope to pull your bow up into your stand, after you are firmly in your stand with your safety harness on. Even if you have a wrist strap for your bow, using this still does not eliminate the many dangers of climbing with your bow in hand. (this goes for climbing with a gun as well). Good Luck this fall, take care of yourself and each other. Newman Brown
