It’s the first Jazz In The Round of the year and were starting as we mean to go on in 2015 with a strong three-way line up. Simon Purcell is one of the most lauded jazz educators in the UK. As Head of Jazz at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Dance and Music in London he’s nurtured and launched many a career. Amazingly the pianist has just released his own first album as a leader and he’ll be playing music from Red Circle at JITR with a band boasting some of the best players on the scene, many familiar to the Cockpit crowd - saxophonist Julian Siegel, trumpeter Chris Batchelor and drummer Gene Calderazzo. Great tunes and classic contemporary jazz to clear the January blues. We’ve another great first for JITR with a solo spot form Steel Pan Sam - Sam Dubois is Europe’s leading exponent of jazz-pans! Surely this is going to sound great in the wonderful Cockpit acoustic. We start the night Nerija - an all-female six piece that are yet another fine project to come out of the Tomorrow’s Warriors school. They’ll be mixing up their own new tunes with some classic repertoire.
