It’s true too many abusers get off lightly. And they will continue to do so until laws are passed making animal abuse a felony. Most states still carry laws treating animal abuse as a misdemeanor – punishable by fines and community service. Those of us who love our animal have to lobby our lawmakers – at the city, state and federal levels – to make animal abuse a serious crime punishable by serious jail time. We also need to lobby to make them stop treating puppy mills as legitimate businesses. Puppy millers need to stop being “punished” by a slap on the wrist, a fine and then the freedom to move 50 miles down the road to reopen their “business”. This is animal abuse at it’s worst and they need to be fined, jailed, and prevented from ever opening a new puppy mill. If we, animal lovers all, want this to stop we need to make our voices, and outrage, heard. We can stop it if we try.
