Ive always been curious about the band Rush -- they have the cachet of being something like the ultimate nerd-metal-prog band, that people either dislike or love to unhealthy extremes. I pretty much missed the Rush boat (other than the radio songs like Tom Sawyer and Closer to the Heart), but seeing them referenced by the Prog Folks among my friends ( Vernon Harmon, Rand Bellavia, Jake Freivald, maybe Jim Poltrone -- though I dont know if Jims referenced Rush), Ive decided to give them a try, from the very beginning. To that end, I just listened to their debut albums first track, Finding My Way ... ... And man, talk about an introduction that gives very little hint of whats to come. The drive and energy and obvious musicianship are there, but that songs got something like the archetype for Generic Rawk Lyrics (You done me no right but youve done me some wrong/Left me lonely each night while I sing my sad song/Look out, Im comin, whoa whoa ...). Musically, its still engaging, but one would never predict from this outset that this would be the band beloved of legions of trigonometry majors to come. On to Track Two ...
