Ive been CABARET-ed to death, having spent 2.5 years on the Joel - TopicsExpress

Ive been CABARET-ed to death, having spent 2.5 years on the Joel Grey revival of 1987, and paid several calls on the subsequent Roundabout Anything You Can Do, We Can Do Smarmier revival. I was interested to revisit Ben Brantleys review of the Roundabouts 1998 production; he was one of the only ones to detect the inherent flaws in the book, which were happily obscured in the blaze of the 1966 triumph, but glaringly apparent to some of us working on the 1987 version. I vividly remember spending late nights with Alyson Reed, pondering why and how the character of Sally Bowles goes from A to D, then after intermission utterly skips to X through Z. She was masterful under the circumstances, and I just loved her, on and offstage. And I just loved working with Ron Field, who pioneered all those musical stagings which have been echoed ever since.
