Ive been asked all day by students and colleagues what I think of - TopicsExpress

Ive been asked all day by students and colleagues what I think of the results of yesterdays elections. Ive been responding with something I hope people can learn from this election and its coverage. The lesson I hope we can all learn is that we must be smart consumers of news and information and not simply take things at face value, regardless of the source. We must all DO OUR OWN HOMEWORK! Three election results yesterday illuminate my point. For years now weve heard that Republicans, conservatives and the Tea Party are racists and are engaged in a war against women. This narrative has been forwarded by Democratic candidates and spokespeople, as well as many in the news media. So, these racists nominated and elected Tim Scott, the first black senator elected from the south. These racists and misogynists nominated and elected the youngest women ever elected to the House, Mia Love who also happens to be black. And these woman-haters also elected Joni Ernst to the Senate from Iowa, who received strong support from men. These results will, unfortunately, not stop people in the political class and media from trying to convince you that people on the right are evil haters. But hopefully it will give real Americans a view of the truth, and cause them to be smarter consumers of what they see, read, and hear. I learned this lesson a while ago, which might explain why I filled in ovals next to just as many Ds as Rs yesterday.
