Ive been caught quite off guard by the tremendous amount of attention that has been given to ALS in the past week or so. You see, those three little letters have had a strong grip on me for the past 21 years. I see those letters and my heart grieves. I relive the pain of watching this monster slowly take the life of my beautiful courageous mother. I see those letters and remember feeling alone and small facing this unknown disease with no support groups yet formed. I see those letters and recall not knowing how to handle the next stage of debilitation because nothing had yet been developed. I see those letters and am filled with fear that I may be given the same news one day. So you can imagine my when I saw these crazy ice bucket challenges. Light was being shined on this deadly theif and I no longer felt as alone.This greater awareness gives me hope and that grip of fear Ive allowed to lurk in the shadows no longer has a place here. I am deeply grateful for the young man in the video I am sharing. His name is Pete Frates and this is The Real Story Behind the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. As my sis-in-law Karen Kelley Bowdle said regarding Pete...THANK YOU, THANK YOU. Your love-fueled actions have FINALLY brought THE BEAST out of its dark...and frustratingly unexplainable hiddenness...and may it now be utterly destroyed. Amen!
