Ive been debating whether or not I should go see this movie and Ive come to the conclusion that I most definitely will not. Before you decide to spend your money in support of this movie, read this review and do some of your own research. I fear this movie will deceive a lot of people about who God really is. To the film’s credit, it does show that sin and punishment are a reality. Men must account for taking their free will and choosing to murder each other and destroy the beauty of God’s creation. It wrestles with ideas of free will, mercy and justice, hearing God’s voice and interpreting his silence. So on the positive side, there is room for healthy conversation about these topics. Unfortunately, the metaphor of the Ark as Jesus’ death on a cross (saving us from sin and punishment) doesn’t really follow from this version of the story. This NOAH remains convinced that his mission from God is to kill off all of humanity, with his family being the last humans he is responsible to destroy. Contrary to the Bible, he is not a righteous man who escapes God’s judgment. He is a guilty man; no different than anyone else, who is just last in line to receive his punishment. When I watch a film that has faith-based messages or topics, one of the main things I ask is: Who does this film say God is? Whenever the unseen God plays a role in a visual medium, how is He portrayed? What is His character and personality like? The biggest challenge with NOAH is not that it fails to be Biblically accurate or that an atheist made it. It’s how the film answers this question in every act. NOAH shows a cold, uncaring, distant and vengeful God. He is a creator who has forsaken mankind and whose only concern is justice against the environmental destruction of men. It also depicts that people who attempt to hear and follow God’s voice like Noah does will inevitably end up cold, uncaring, and vengeful as well.
