Ive been reading alot about the marshfield Christmas contention- here are my thoughts- also please remember that Not Being Offended Is Not A Right. I guess the point is.... the holiday we are celebrating is, in fact, Christmas. We dont make jewish people give up chanukah, or muslims give up Ramadan. No ones telling people kwanza is offensive. Im not particularly religious, but it seems odd that we are so quick to give away one groups rights, just so that we dont offend anyone- even though not being offended is actually not a right, and last I checked, all the people who might feel excluded still have their religious rights fully intact. We are a mainly protestant and catholic nation. You are telling the majority of the people that what they believe, what our nation fought so hard for and was founded on, that their religion is offensive. If you go to Isreal, what do you think their break is called? Do you think they will change it to stop offending people? What about muslim countries? Should everyone in the whole world be forced to start referring to any time taken to celebrate a religious holiday as simply holiday. Did anyone in marshfield who is of a different religion, ask for this change? Was there a petition? Or was it just a few white people who didnt want to come off as insensitive? Im all for everyone celebrating whatever they feel like, what im not for is disenfrachising the rights of an enormous group of people just so no ones feelings get hurt. Its called christmas break because we have it off so that the 78.4 percent of our country that are some form of christian can celebrate. The end.
