Ive been reading other pages that talk of heating coops. If your coop is relatively draft free, even this far north no heat is needed and can actually be counter productive to the winter conditioning of your birds (been doing a lot of reading). The general consensus from several bloggers and writers I respect is that it is the combination of moisture and cold that brings on problems such as frostbite. I did not heat ANY of my 6 coops last winter and I only had problems with one (rooster patrol building) and frostbite. This was because it was drafty imho. All other coops had good air circulation and deep litter which in and of itself generates heat along with the chickens bodies.
