Ive been thinking a lot about tomorrows Fury Pride image... I want to empower skaters to really believe that their derby career doesnt have to end if they choose to address or leave a toxic environment. In the beginning of this year, I told my team that I would rather skate with them in a parking lot than be held hostage in a dysfunctional situation. Derby is FOR the skater! If your league isnt meeting your needs 1) get involved and represent the change you wish to see, 2) cut out the cancer- its hard!!! SOOOOO HARD! We want to like all of our teammates, and we want to accept them as they are, but some people bring way too much baggage to the table. Work with them if you can, by all means, but dont allow them to spoil the experience for your team, for new skaters, for a leadership team trying desperately to pay the bills and keep everyone together! 3) LEAVE for a league that more closely represents your needs (there are 7 in Houston), 4) LEAVE and start your own team with like minded people. YOU WILL HAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO PLAY! Do not surrender yourself to an environment that doesnt bring you alive. And this goes for my team, too! ALWAYS hold me accountable to your highest wishes for derby, for your training, for your leadership. That will keep me on my toes and help me improve my game- on and off the track!
