Ive been writing about the farm as if you-all know me, but I think my readership has widened a bit, so perhaps a few explanations are in order. Brick Kiln Landing Farm is my (Sallys) family home. Its named for the Brick Kiln that was in the far field, near Wythe Creek. Back in the day my great-grandfather would ferry things back and forth from Poquoson to Hampton on his boat, leaving with crops and returning with purchases. The landing doesnt have a dock any longer, but one day soon my parents hope to correct that (it wasnt just Isabel, but she didnt help). The homeplace passed down through the women: my grandmother was a Freeman, whose mother was a Moore; my mother is a Martin who married Rae Harcum. My parents live in the homeplace and Dave and I live just down the road in Poquoson, while brother Payten has his own farm in Toano (just on the other side of Williamsburg). Were starting our family cooperative now: 1) for extra income and 2) to offer good fresh products from the farm to the people of Poquoson. We want to be organic, but thats a process. In Poquoson, we have only used organic pesticides this year and the field that weve used was pasture last year. But most of all, we decided that we would only sell what we grow. I hope this little explanation gives you a better insight into the people growing your food. Were small; were your neighbors; were enjoying what we do! Thank you for supporting us!
