Ive had this debate with numerous people - do balls or lane patterns dictate the higher scoring pace? I believe the ease of lane patterns are mostly the cause of increased (or fabricated) scoring pace. No matter how talented the bowler, using what ever latest and greatest ball - the flatter the pattern the lower the scores. That cant be said with patterns! The easier the pattern no matter how old your ball is, you have a much greater chance of scoring higher! As a source - lets compare the (US Open scores 2013) Vs (the PBA plastic ball scores 2010) The top 16 bowlers at the US Open averaged between 220.87 and 206.11 The top 16 at the Plastic Ball event averaged between 243.16 and 225.44 A considerable difference especially when many of the same players in both tournaments made the top 16. In fact, most of the bowlers were WAY BETTER bowlers (including me) at the US open 3 years later. The scores dont reflect that at all! So I ask you now - are the balls really the biggest cause to higher scores?
