Ive had two young women weep uncontrollably in my office in two weeks, when I had to tell them the truth about their academics so far. I also had a long talk with another young man. And tomorrow, another young man. Had a good experiment that unfortunately gave us results we didnt want. The gene we target, PECAM-1, is dangerous to remove, and few mice are born lacking this gene. There is no person alive who lacks this gene, it is that vital. And single mutations of the gene may be linked to susceptibility to cardiovascular and pulmonary disease. But we need these mice, the few who survive. Being a professor/teacher/researcher is hard some days.
