Ive heard grumblings about the possibility that Jesse Jackson was in Ferguson and asked people to give to his organization. Some people have said that this makes him a money hungry sellout who is unworthy of our support. Unfortunately, many of the same people who wouldnt give Rainbow/Push $15 to help poor black people will gladly go give $250 to the family who owns Walmart and has consistently reiterated that they dont give a damn about you or your people. I think we as a community have to realize that black institutions can only exist and do their work if we support them. You cant allow white corporations to pay for our institutions to exist, and then get angry because these same corporations are controlling the actions of black institutions. Thats like a grown man living rent free with his mama and then demanding that he be treated like the man of the house. He who pays the bills makes the rules. Even if Rev. Jackson were to only use half of your money to help black people, thats still a whole lot more than those corporations we give money to on a daily basis - at least Jackson hires black people, which most businesses do not. Its time to elevate our thinking and realize that we all play a critical role in the development of our community. We cant let other people take the wheel and then get mad because they are driving in the wrong direction. Go ahead and give Jesse a few dollars to do his work....When a 72-year old man is getting up every day and speaking up on behalf of poor, black and brown people, we have to give him the respect he deserves.
