Ive heard some guff spoken about the Poppy this week. People can mark remembrance however they choose and no one should feel forced to wear a poppy.....but I will continue to wear one. I dont agree with all decisions to send our troops into conflict and I understand some peoples distaste at seeing politicians at the Cenotaph. But the poppy is not a symbol of war nor is it owned by government, or any sector of the community. It is the symbol and primary fundraising tool of the British Legion. A charity which supports ex service personnel (of all conflicts, including recent and current operations) and their families. The plight of those injured and the families of those killed would be worse without them. Its also a national symbol of remembrance and I think of respect.....that has been earned. Its a shame that right wing idiots like Britain First attempt to misappropriate the symbol for their own twisted cause. But to abandon it would allow them to do so. I will continue to wear one because I support the human values it represents and the work done with the money raised.
