Ive learned a few things in this travel gig. One of the most important is that coworkers matter more than I could have imagined. Ive met some nice folks, but nobody to share my shift with. When I am overwhelmed Im alone. An outsider. When I feel tears coming because of grief for a patient or because I cant keep my head above water, I force them back because I have such little trust in the sea of unfamiliar faces. It is an eye-opening experience for me. On a positive note, it makes me flexible. I think I could walk onto the unit and be told I have to float to Jupiter tonight and Id just shrug it off and head for the launch pad.
