Ive never understood physicians who say, When I first visited a hospital when I was 6, I knew I wanted to be a doctor and work there. Hospitals, while necessary and noble, are generally dreary and a place your goal is to avoid. I realized today while attending a dental seminar why Ive always loved hotels. Hotels are aspirational. They are grand. They are welcoming. They are about a better life. The 80s music from my formative high school years was similarly aspirational. The New Romantics like Duran Duran ushered out the ugliness of punk and Carters malaise and ushered in the unabashedly materialistic age of Reagan and an improving standard of living. Impossibly good looking, even their clothes were, well, fabulous! The music was uplifting, perfect pop; videos like Rio were like films of the vacation you dream about.
