Ive never understood the ritual of taking down decorations on 12/26 that seems to be specific to the South and Alabama. Most folks around here put up their decorations on Thanksgiving weekend, so whats the rush? Growing up in the midwest, specifically Ohio, the Christmas season always carried through the New Years holiday. In fact, Ive never taken my stuff down before 1/1, and oftentimes its been 2 weeks into January before anything is put back in my attic. The 12 days of Christmas in the traditional song dont actually start until 12/25; the actual *day* of Christmas, and not ending until 1/6. Historically, January 6th is the Epiphany in Christian/Catholic tradition. Additionally, January 1 (New Years Day) is the Solemnity of Mary which celebrates her motherhood secondary to the birth of Christ; therefore 1/1 is an extension of Christmas. So, I say relax. The rush to deconstruct Christmas on 12/26 is in essence an extension of the over-commercialization of the Holy day. Christmas tidings should extend thru 1/6. Youll never see my tree at the curb before then.
