Ive posted about it already, but today is an extremely sad day for me and all of my metal family. Dave Brockie (aka Oderus Urungus - the mastermind and singer of GWAR) passed away last night. Ive been a die hard GWAR fab since 1991 and Ive seen them live at least 10 times. GWAR has always been one of the greatest live bands in the history of mankind because of their kickass music and unbelievable stage shows. I was fortunate to have met Dave twice: once as a fan in Chicago and then again early last year as a reporter. When I met him as a fan with my buddy Ron Thomas at the Rolling Stone music store in Chicago, the stupid camera didnt function properly and the film never developed. The entire roll of film turned out brown. I was crushed. When I interviewed him, it was at the Hard Rock Cafe here in Las Vegas several hours before their concert and he was not in costume. Sadly, I never took a photo with him (SO STUPID OF ME!!!!) but I can honestly say that it was BY FAR the best interview I have ever done in my entire life. I said those exact words to my wife Lucia Lucia D. Sloan when I called her while walking back to my car. I will never forget that day as long as I live. Ever. I interviewed him a second time several months later over the phone for the release of their last album Battle Maximus and again it was another tremendous interview. Dave Brockie was a hell of an entertainer, someone I am so thankful to have met and had actual conversations with. Im not sure if he was just being friendly but Dave and I spoke about working together on a full-blown GWAR biography. It has always been a dream project for me and he seemed totally on board with it. He gave me his cell number and wanted me to connect with him after the US tour GWAR was about to embark on. Sadly, I was never able to get back in touch with him after the tour ended. I was literally planning on contacting GWARs management to see if the ball could get rolling on the biography, but now hes left us all and headed back to his home planet. Damn, hell be missed forever. If GWAR somehow continues on without him, itll never be the same. Like a very select few people in metal, Dave/Oderus is 1000% irreplaceable. PS: Im not sure who took this photo of Oderus, but it captures him in concert perfectly.
