Ive received numerous messages and calls asking how sweet Mona is doing and I apologize for not keeping you updated as I was having a hard time bringing the newest update to everyones attention because my personal feelings about the decision to do radiation treatment on her to prolong her life for a few more months didnt sit well with me. We are entitled to our own opinions and some of you may think radiation treatment is a good thing for her and thats ok, as I know we all care for Mona and want the best for her. Monas condition is not one we can cure or even operate on and she will never be able to live quality of life with her condition. We have to remember Mona was taken away from the family she knows and loves and has been in the hands of strangers and different vet hospitals for testing and treatment the past couple of weeks. I know most of you think how could Monas family loved her if they let her get to this point? Well Monas owner was a younger guy who did love her enough to take her to the vet in hopes he could do something for this rapidly growing tumor that started in May as a small bump and also cared enough to let her be relinquished to a rescue in hopes they could help her and give her a second chance because he could not afford her care and loved her. My heart aches for Mona as she will never have the chance to be adopted by a loving family or live a happy life again because she has a very limited time with us. I appreciate those who have stepped up for Mona like All Paws Rescue and volunteers, because like I said they didnt have to take Mona under their care and could have walked away but they didnt and I love them for that! Ive learned we sometimes make decisions for our own selfish reasons and its not because we dont care but merely because we sometime care so much and over see the big picture... Please keep Mona in your prayers as she is in need of many right now.. ___________________________________________________________________ UPDATE: July 22nd, Mona was taken to City Of Angels Cancer Group in Los Angeles, CA and was seen by an amazing Oncologist to further assess her condition and gather more information as the tumor continues grow rapidly. Having as much knowledge and opinions as possible is the only way to make the best decision for Mona and her serious condition. After accessing the CT scan, mitotic index (determines the speed of the growing tumor), the placement of the tumor, biopsy results, bone damage etc, the Oncologist did not offer chemotherapy or surgery as he strongly felt neither were an option. In his words this is really bad and she is not happy. After a very long visit, discussing all aspects of Monas health, age (lesion on her lung, age, meds, diet, appetite and quality of life) and the very real seriousness of her condition, the options given were Palliative Radiation or euthanasia. After thoroughly considering all things, All Paws Rescue, Rehabilitation & Education decided the best thing for Mona and the quality of her life would be to provide her immediate relief and pain management therapy. Mona will be getting an ultrasound on her head today in an effort to locate large pockets of fluid to be drained. Extracting this fluid (T-Centisis, Therapeutic) can potentially offer immediate relief. In addition we agreed to proceed with Palliative Radiation. Palliative Radiation is given to reduce the pain and swelling of tumors. Palliative Radiation will not cure this disease but simply improve the quality of her life. With Palliative Radiation, there is a chance it could shrink the tumor a bit, which would provide her relief, again improving the quality of her very short life. Historically the benefits of this 5 day treatment can last 2-4 months tops. (to learn more about Palliative Radiation cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Therapy/radiation) In addition to this active therapy (which also starts today) Mona will start Prednisone, Gabapentin and Gentile eye serum (to maintain the dryness of her left eye.) Mona also has an ear infection and is currently being treated for that. One thing is very clear after gathering all possible information from multiple sources is that Mona is terminal, her diagnosis is grim and her time with us is borrowed. The decision to improve the quality of the short time Mona has left on this earth, is humane and what Mona deserves. Once this treatment is over, Mona will be put into a loving foster home to live out her last days being spoiled, loved and be treated with grace and dignity.
