Ive recently had the chance to see the DVD of an obscure but really interesting opera I never would have imagined being able to see or hear : Der Kobold (The Goblin ) , by none other than Siegfried Wagner, son of the mighty Richard ,on netflix . Siegfried Wagner (1869- 1930 ) was the only son of Wagner and his wife Cosima , and a well known composer and conductor in his day . He wrote about 17 operas and other works , and these operas were widely performed in Germany until WW 2 when they sank into obscurity . But in recent years in Germany , some of the smaller German opera companies have been reviving them , and some have been released on CD & DVD . The performance of Der Kobold was filmed at the municipal theater of Furth, Germany a suburb of Nurmberg, birthplace of Henry Kissinger , and is by the Nuremberg opera . The opera deals with a tormented young woman named Verena who is haunted by a past tragedy , which turns out to be the ghost (Kobold) of the baby boy she had born and then killed at birth . She searches in vain for love with various men until she dies at the end , and the spirit of the baby is finally released from haunting her . The story is too complex to explain here . Siegfrieds music shows the strong influence of his father as well as his teacher Engelbert Humperdick but has a personality of its own . On the basis of this DVD , Siegfried was not aa negligable composer by any means . Der Kobold is definitely worth trying . The performance was also released on CD on the Marco Polo label .
