Ive seen this article posted on a lot of my friends walls, and they are agreeing with it, which has left me a tad bit frustrated. I read this, and I couldnt help but feel a little bit annoyed. I am one of those moms guilty of trying to make my kids childhood magical. I do elaborate crafts, hide the elf, make leprechaun traps, take them on vacations, etc., etc. Heres the thing: sure, I was happy playing with a box growing up, and we never went on vacations (unless you count Geagua Lake). But times have changed, and with that change has come growth and the internet...a fabulous source that acts as an endless source of information. If my mom had access to Pinterest when we were kids, we wouldve probably done lots of elaborate crafts, too. If my mother worked outside of the home when we were kids like myself and lots of other women do today, we probably wouldve had more money and wouldve been able to take family vacations. As a child, I always loved crafting and was very imaginative and creative. The growth of the information age has allowed me to be able to put these skills to good use as a parent. I enjoy making magic with my children. I dont see it as a bad thing. My kids are happy, healthy, creative, imaginative children who are perfectly capable of looking at the world and making their own magic. The fact that I create memories and moments for us to cherish doesnt affect their ability to do so. Furthermore, asking parents of today to recreate a simpler childhood of 30 years ago in todays world is in itself obtuse and unrealistic. Times have changed, kids have changed, parents have changed. I happen to be one of those people who believe that change is a good thing. As long as we are all trying our best and raising our children to be the best people they can be in the world they live in, I think thats enough.
