Ive sent this letter in to The Age - Hoping to be published this time. :-) In the meantime maybe we could start a debate? Instead of providing a simple bailout or ‘grant’ for SPC (effectively to Coca-Cola Amatil) the Federal Government should provide a $25 million long term public co-investment, and also an accompanying low-interest loan to the SPC workers, enabling them to reacquire the assets and the brand collectively, and run the business again as a democratic co-operative. What the government should not do is to demand a grinding down of wages and conditions. Unfortunately the Conservatives seem to see intensifying exploitation as some kind of ‘competitive panacea’ to be imposed by militant employers.
