I’LL TEACH THE PEOPLE HOW TO DEFEAT POVERTY – ORTOM Governorship aspirant in Benue State, Chief Dr. Samuel Ortom, has pledged that if given the mandate he would teach the people of the state how to fight and defeat poverty. He made the pledge at a reception in Abwa, Buruku local government area, after a thanksgiving service which former Vice Chancellor of the Benue State University, Professor Akase Paul Sorkaa organized for him. The service was held at Iyol I Kristu Parish where Rev Father Joseph Agbecha blessed the Minister of State, Industry, Trade and Investment and prayed that God would grant him a successful outing. Chief Dr Ortom who described himself as a good example of how God could raise someone who submits to Him from humble beginnings to fight and defeat poverty said he would replicate the feat for the people of the state by teaching them how to overcome the challenge. He said poverty and the related problems of disease and illiteracy which remain the greatest afflictions of the majority of the people of the could be tackled and reduced to the barest minimum if the people elect someone like him who wore the shoes and knew where it hurt. The Minister who aspires on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said if he could on a personal note establish ventures that have provided jobs for over 400 people he could do more if given the mandate. According to him the formula included public-private partnership in the establishment of industries especially those for processing agro-based raw materials and solid minerals, boosting of commercial activities and attraction of investment into the state. He stressed that the initiative would tackle unemployment and create wealth and opportunities. Chief Dr Ortom promised to also add value to all sectors particularly the provision of needed infrastructure such as roads, electricity, health care, affordable and qualitative education as well as portable water. While interacting with traditional rulers at a separate venue he pledged to upgrade the institution in order to enable it discharge its responsibilities as the custodian of the culture, values and memory of the people. Various groups including Ortom Buruku Mothers and Dwem Family decorated him in Tiv traditional attire and presented him with gifts including yams, domestic animals, fish, oranges and soup ingredients.
