I’d rather be teaching… Dear Parents, By now, you’ve heard that there definitely will be a strike, starting tomorrow, in BC. I want you to know that I would rather be in the classroom with your kids. That’s where I belong and I love being their teacher. You may not agree with everything that I have to say in this letter, but there is a lot I believe you need to know. This situation is about more than wages; private school funding, class size and composition, and quality public education in BC are far more important issues that are not getting enough attention in the media. There is very little that I feel I can do as a teacher, but there is a lot that you can do as parents, because, in the end, it is your voices the government will listen to. As my students, your kids and mine, go through the school system, I know they will have less than they have now. There will be far less available for special needs support, far less available for learning technology, far less available in terms of teacher morale. I know that the government is creating a crisis in education and blaming my colleagues and I for it. The bottom line seems to be: the government doesn’t want to allow me to keep doing my job well. I put everything I have into your kids. I do my best to bring out the best in each of them every day. And my students know how to bring out the best in me. The media and my employer, the government of BC, are telling me that I don’t matter. My employer is telling me that my students don’t matter and that I should be able to do my job with no funding or class size and composition support. I’m being told that I’m being militant, greedy, and unfair. I’m asking you now to let the government know what you think, because if you write letters supporting me, my colleagues, and a strong public education system, then it may be enough for the government to take notice and really begin working to avert the crisis that they have created. Please, stand up for public education, because our kids are going to be in it, and if no one says anything, it’s going to get a whole lot worse. Go to this website and send the form letter to your MLA, the Minister of Education, and the Premier of BC. Take the time to write a letter to government about your support for teachers and public education. youtube/watch?v=LrLaBU_LbWI
