I’m aware of the historical injustices the Palestinians have - TopicsExpress

I’m aware of the historical injustices the Palestinians have suffered and continue to suffer. I’m aware of Israel’s land grabs, settlements, checkpoints and targeted killings. I’m also aware of the poverty and disease in Gaza and the fact that it is the world’s biggest open-air prison. But even with this knowledge, I find it hard to understand how the leaders of Hamas, when offered a ceasefire by Egypt, Israel and the US could say “no, lets continue the killings for a bit longer until we can get the perfect ceasefire terms that we want” while being fully aware that every single day that goes without a ceasefire could mean a dozen or more innocent Palestinians losing their lives. I thought that for the leaders of a people who are being killed every day, the first priority would be to stop the loss of lives. I’m familiar with the words of Malcom X where he said “If youre not careful, the newspapers will have you hating the people who are being oppressed, and loving the people who are doing the oppressing” but I hope that he wasn’t suggesting that the leaders of oppressed peoples were immune to criticism.
