I’m going to the Giants game this Friday night. And when I get there I’m going to Section 142, Row 33, Seats 13 and 14, in the bleachers. The reason? I want to say hi to the woman in these pictures. Her name is Eileen Low. And her story really touched me. Especially how she ended up with two tickets to the game. Eileen came here from Vietnam with her family 37 years ago. They had nothing. But they worked hard. They learned English. And all ten of the kids, including Eileen, graduated from college. Eileen got married. She had three children. Life was good. But earlier this year, Eileen discovered a lump in her breast. She had cancer. She was terrified. Especially having to tell her kids, including 9 year-old Caroline: “She’s the emotional one. So I took her for a walk. I knew she was going to take it hard, because the mom of one of her closest friends died from breast cancer last year at the age of 31.” Eileen tried to avoid using the word cancer while talking to Caroline: “I said there are some bad cells in my body. And mommy has to get some surgery to get rid of them.” Her daughter broke down crying. Since then Eileen has had a double mastectomy. But the cancer spread to her lymph nodes. She underwent chemotherapy. Now she’s undergoing radiation. The second picture is of her three children cutting her hair before the treatments. Eileen says: “I wanted to be in control of my hair. So instead of losing in batches, I let my kids cut it!” Now this is where the tickets to the game come in. Eileen used to take her niece Michelle to Giants games when she was little. And Michelle wanted to pay her back. Michelle says: I entered the Giants lottery with fingers crossed and was lucky enough to get a chance to get her tickets. They were $275 each. And Eileen was thrilled when she found out: You guys are CRAZY! Woohoo!! No WAY!! But there’s even better news. This Friday is also Eileen’s last radiation treatment. So it’s going to be a double celebration. Michelle says: “The tickets are her Im done with treatment present because she is the most generous person I know.” I’ve said it before. I hate cancer. And Eileen is not out of the woods just yet. She won’t find out if the cancer is truly gone for another six months. But after all she’s been through this year, this Friday is going to be really special. “Hey we’re going to World Series. I can’t get any better than that.” I like Eileens spirit. And Im looking forward to seeing her at the game. Go Giants.
