I’ve conducted funerals for both Christians and non-Christians. As I look into the audience, the tears are just as real for Christians, but I also see hope, perspective, and peace in the midst of mourning. The promise of God overshadows everything: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away” (Revelation 21:4). We haven’t “lost” our believing loved ones, because we know where they are. And we know in the resurrection we will live with God and with them on a New Earth. We shouldn’t restrict our vision to the narrow horizons of this world (see 1 Corinthians 15:19). For Christians, death is not a wall but a doorway. Death is not a last good-bye, but a “See you later.” Alcorn, Randy (2009-09-09). If God Is Good: Faith in the Midst of Suffering and Evil (p. 482).
