While votes for Speaker of the House were made public starting in 1839, I shared the belief of many conservatives who supported returning to a secret ballot for Speaker so that members could work their will without fear of retribution. I believe that’s consistent with our conservative principles, whether it’s fighting for integrity at the ballot box or stopping labor unions from imposing card check on their employees.
