J.K. Rowling / Harry Potter In the case of the Harry Potter writer, Joanna K. Rowling, the middle initial K does not really stand for anything. She has no middle name, but her publisher thought Harry Potter would sell better if she disguised her gender as J.K. Rowling. Thus, the mysterious K was born, which Rowling attributes to Kathleen, her grandmother. By July 2013, the books had sold between 400 and 450 million copies, making them one of the best-selling book series in history, and had been translated into 73 languages. The last four books consecutively set records as the fastest-selling books in history, with the final installment selling approximately 11 million copies in the United States within the first twenty-four hours of its release.
