JNU ties up with 5 foreign varsities to offer global studies program India’s premier Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has joined hands with five top foreign institutes of higher education to offer a two-year Global Studies Program (GSP). The transnational education program provides exposure of multiple countries to the students. The masters’ program will be administered jointly by six universities including JNU. The students of this program get to learn about diverse regions and their cultures within the ambit of Social Sciences, with special focus on the global south. According to JNU officials, all the participating institutes, barring JNU, grant the degree jointly. The students of the program begin their first semester at the Albert-Lud wigs-Universitat in Freiburg or Humboldt-Universitat zu in Berlin, based on their choices. From Germany, the candidates move to the University of Cape Town in South Africa or FLACSO, Buenos Aires in Argentina for the second semester. The third semester is spent at either JNU or Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, which is followed by an internship stint. Students need to write a dissertation at the German varsity during the final semester. The interdisciplinary program was launched in 2001. It covers various subjects including Political Science, Sociology, Economics, Geography and Anthropology, with specialized modules on Global Governance, Globalization and Cultural Change. The Centre for the Study of Social Systems (CSSS) at JNU offers papers including Modernization and Development as well as South Asian Social Thought, while candidates can take up optional courses in any Social Sciences department of JNU. According to JNU officials, the selection of regions to deliver the program has been made with utmost care. Social knowledge-building first flourished in Europe. Latin America and Africa provide an insight to the different aspects of the industrial revolution as well as European expansionism. The third semester in South Asia/South-east Asia exposes the students to ancient civilization, western colonization, etc. Candidates acquire knowledge about the values and ideas existing in Europe from the 16th century onwards. At a later stage, they are educated on the same aspects prevalent in Latin America and Africa during the same period of time. A comprehensive understanding of the last 500 years in the field of Sociology is provided through the program, the officials added.
