JNUSU Team to Visit Muzaffarnagar In the past few weeks, we have seen yet another horrific saga of orchestrated communal violence – this time in Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. Several lives have been lost in the widespread arson and rioting, several hundreds have been displaced from their homes and life in still in a state of chaos in several villages. Especially after details of the whole incident are emerging, it is very clear that the Muzaffarnagar violence was essentially ‘engineered’ by communal fascist forces for their narrow interests. Fake videos were made and circulated, despite official ‘curfews’ and prohibitory orders, large meetings were allowed where blatantly provocative speeches were made. And most unfortunately, the Akhilesh Yadav led state government proved completely unwilling and incapable of either preventing the violence or even punishing those responsible. After much public pressure, FIRs have been filed against BJP MLAs such as Hukum Singh, Suresh Rana and Sangeet Singh Som and BKU leaders Naresh Tikait and Rakesh Tikait. However, the UP government is refusing to act on the FIRs and arrest these leaders, even as the BJP is openly threatening ‘more violence’ if any action is taken against them! As the 2014 elections draw near, Muzaffarnagar shows us that the BJP has planned to literally walk over corpses in its bid for power. As a result of the violence in Muzaffarnagar, several thousands of people are displaced and living in refugee camps, living in fear of their lives and further attacks. As the situation in Muzaffarnagar continues to be grave, a JNUSU team led by the JNUSU President and Vice President will be visiting Muzaffarnagar, leaving today (21st September 2013). This team, which is already in touch with the local residents, will gather information from the ground on what help and support can be provided by JNUSU and JNU students to the violence-affected people in Muzaffarnagar.
