Background WWF is a strong advocate for responsible private sector engagement on water issues, and has long worked with companies in watershed protection. Corporate Water Stewardship is a progression of increased improvement of water use and a reduction in the water-related impacts of internal and value chain operations. More importantly, it is the commitment to the sustainable management of shared water resources in the public interest through collective action with other businesses, governments, NGOs and communities. WWF works with leading institutions globally to implement water stewardship through the private sector, including the Water Disclosure programme and the CEO Water Mandate. We have developed the Water Risk Filter as a guide to addressing water risk, and are partners in the Alliance for Water Stewardship, which has developed a standard for water stewardship implementation in the private sector. WWF-SA works on water stewardship in the agricultural, forestry and mining sectors with a range of corporate partners. We are now looking for someone to bring this body of work together, ensure effective implementation and develop strategies for long term sustainability in water stewardship that links the private and public sector and local communities. The Freshwater Programmes would like to recruit a programme manager to assist in this critical and urgent task. We need a capable person to focus on this area over the next two years and ensure this principal outcome of Freshwater partnerships. Reporting to the Senior Manager of Freshwater Programmes. Responsibilities: To update the strategy for WWF-SA’s implementation of water stewardship in South Africa and lead the implementation of this strategy. To review our current programmes of work in water stewardship and lead a change process to enable greater impact. To develop necessary partnerships in support of water stewardship in priority areas. To liaise with other programmes within WWF-SA and other NGOs to establish implementation of stewardship and protected environments. To liase with CMAs, SANBI and DWA on implementation of their programmes in partnership with private sector stewardship. Competencies/Skills Required: An M.Sc or higher in water resources management or a conservation linked subject; An understanding of the regulatory and policy environment for water management in South Africa and the key challenges; Strategic thinking and an understanding of water stewardship implementation in South Africa; A holistic understanding of the land and water management in South Africa and drivers of change; Excellent communication skills; Experience in managing multi-stakeholder processes and projects.
