JOB OF THE WEEK: Scientific & Technical Officer (Bayesian Statistician), The Marine Institute. A partner in the FP7 project “Effective Use of Ecosystem and Biological Knowledge in Fisheries” (ECOKNOWS). The aim of this project is to improve the use of biological knowledge in fisheries and management through statistical inference. Under this project the Marine Institute is looking to employ a Bayesian statistician to further the generic ECOKNOWS modelling approach to forecast Irish salmon populations. The individual will be responsible for coding the current approach to salmon catch advice in a Bayesian framework. Furthermore, the development of a life cycle approach will require the incorporation of biologically relevant information and associated uncertainty into a hierarchical Bayesian framework. This will require extensive literature review of existing Bayesian forecasting techniques initially. A strong link with the ongoing workpackages of the ECOKNOWS partnership will need to be fostered by correspondence and attendance at meeting.
