JOB POSTING: TEMPORARY 40 HOURS/WEEK CERAMICS PROGRAM COORDINATOR/STUDIO MANAGER Civic Arts Education is Northern California’s largest community arts education program, serving over 7,000 students annually in the areas of 2D and 3D visual arts, dance, music and theatre. The program employs almost 200 artists per year and offerings almost 700 class offerings annually. Civic Arts Education is a program of the City of Walnut Creek’s Arts, Recreation and Community Services Department. The nationally renowned Civic Arts Education’s Ceramics program, located in Civic Park in Walnut Creek, CA, offers over a hundred class offerings annually. We serve over 1,100 students per year and bring in master potters from around the world throughout the year to teach workshops and classes. With over 7,000 square feet of studio space and eight kilns, this highly successful program boasts one of the only regular salt firing classes in the Bay Area and is also fortunate to be able to offer Raku programming. The Ceramics program is also supported through a partnership with the Walnut Creek Clay Arts Guild. The Guild provides studio monitors, volunteers and fundraising support for equipment and programming. The City is seeking a ceramics professional to serve as the program coordinator and studio manager. POSITION DESCRIPTION: Ceramics Coordinator Requirements: Temporary 40 hours per week position, Monday through Friday, 8 am – 5pm, reporting to the Civic Arts Education Program Manager Coordinate and implement the planning, presentation and/or promotion of specialized ceramics arts education classes and workshop programs in cooperation with other staff, contractors, and volunteer groups; supervise and coordinate the activities of ceramics staff and volunteers; and do related work required. Assist in the development of new programs, maintaining quality and keeping class & other program offerings fresh and innovative. Help initiate and develop sources of program support. Assist in the development and preparation of annual budgets and program reviews. Ensure that the offerings of the program meet the diverse needs and interests of the community. Maintain oversight of class offerings and contracted instructors to ensure quality programming. Execute class evaluation surveys at the completion of each quarter. Maintain liaisons with other national and local ceramic organizations. Research availability and reputation of artists for guest workshops. Develop relationships and identify cross marketing opportunities with other organizations to provide better and more broadly supported programs. Help in the development and preparation of ceramic arts’ educational, promotional and production materials--catalogs, programs and other graphics for publication. Assist in the coordination of two yearly art sales. Assist in liaison work with local volunteer support groups such as the Walnut Creek Clay Arts Guild and other support agencies and arts organizations. Plan and coordinate special events, tours and class programs. Recruit qualified ceramic instructors as needed for program classes and /or workshops; also supervise training of volunteers assisting the ceramics program. Program coordinator has contact with a variety of part- and full-time employees, contractors, artists, volunteers and the public. He or she is the liaison to the custodial contractor, building maintenance, and will coordinate any specialized equipment maintenance. Must cooperate with people under a variety of circumstances and is responsible for implementation of program activities under established departmental guidelines and rules of conduct specific to the operation of a safe studio environment. Sustain and expand the Walnut Creek Clay Arts program as a national center of excellence in the clay arts. Sustain and expand the uniqueness and distinction of the Walnut Creek ceramic arts program within the San Francisco – Bay Area community. Studio Manager Requirements: Maintain program needs including clay for resale to students and other materials specific to operation of studio; cash handling procedures for studio, general equipment maintenance; also maintain general program records and assist in the cataloging and storage of ceramics arts collection. Ensure activity in the studio meets safety standards and that participants are aware of safety procedures. Enforce studio rules and provide consistent expectations for all groups of students. Ensure that the studio is well maintained and firing/class schedules are on time. Ability to supervise a part-time studio assistant. *Special requirement: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and good driving record and qualified in the operation of forklift (3 year forklift operation certificate available thru City of Walnut Creek) and kiln operation MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: College education courses in ceramics, fine arts, arts administration and /or equivalent experience as studio ceramic artist with considerable (2 – 3 years in community arts education programming) or job related experience, including: 1. Great interpersonal skills due to extensive public contact with people who are diverse in their age groups, culture and abilities 2. Knowledge of all ceramic processes and equipment used in ceramics and sculpture studio environment including basic maintenance and repairs of such equipment 3. A skilled potter, glaze formulator and kiln master 4. Experienced studio manager 5. Innovative, entrepreneurial spirit with a vision for the direction of the program 6. Advocate for Civic Arts Education and arts support 7. Proven ability to sustain an organized, efficient, clean and safe studio. 8. Ability to create and maintain schedules 9. Maintain equipment and inventory in the studio 10. 4-5 years of experience in tutoring or training others in ceramics 11. Familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel for business and management operations. Studio manager will set up and maintain studio documentation, file routine reports, complete orders, maintain equipment, clay, chemical & tool inventories, and manage organizational correspondence. Will also help create marketing collateral for ceramics program. 12. Well connected to national ceramic networks 13.
