JOB VACANCY African Biofuel and Renewable Energy Company (ABREC) is a partner within Berkeley Energy’s African Renewable Energy Fund (AREF), a new private equity fund focused on sub-Saharan Africa (excluding South Africa). ABREC is a renewable energy advisory and development company owned by 14 West African states and 6 prominent financial institutions operating in the region. Berkeley Energy already manages the Renewable Energy Asia Fund and has been chosen as the manager for AREF in a competitive process ran by the African Development Bank, who is an anchor investor in the fund. AREF’s mandate is to invest in grid-connected hydro, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and stranded gas power generation projects with installed capacity of 10-50MW. AREF will work closely and actively with developers to take the projects to financial closing, through construction into operation. Target fund size is up to $200 million, with first closing in Q1 2014. The fund has attracted as investors a range of multilateral and development financial institutions, as well as private entities.
