JOCKEY MARIO GUTIERREZ RECEIVES LATINO SPIRIT AWARD In a ceremony on Monday May 5th, in Sacramento, California, Thoroughbred jockey Mario Gutierrez was among 10 recipients of the 2014 Latino Spirit Award, which highlights individuals for their positive role in the Latino community. Winner of the 2012 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes aboard I’ll Have Another, Mario began racing in his native Veracruz and in Mexico City at the age of 14. He immigrated to Canada where he won riding titles at Hastings Park in 2007 and 2008. Among other recognitions and awards, he received the 2012 ESPY Award as Jockey of the Year. He is currently riding at Southern California tracks. “Mario is a respected member of the Southern California jockey colony and we would like to congratulate him on this recognition by the California Latino Legislative Caucus,” said Terry Meyocks, National Manager of the Jockeys’ Guild.
