JOHNNY GOES DOES IN WAR OF DALTON TRUMBO As part of his cycle of films about the centennial of the War of 14-18 ARTE broadcast tonight at 22:30 outstanding more than one feature: Johnny Goes to War (Johnny Got His Gun , 1971.) The first day of the First World War, a young American volunteer is engaged seriously wounded by a shell. Quadruple amputee, disfigured, blind, deaf and dumb, he is cruelly kept alive by doctors. Johnny Goes to War is the only film directed by Dalton Trumbo writer, famous for being one of the Hollywood Ten, a victim of McCarthyism was forced after a stay in prison to work more than ten years under a pseudonym in Hollywood before finding his real name in the credits of a film (for Otto Premingers Exodus and Spartacus by Stanley Kubrick.) In adapting his own novel (written in 1939) on the screen, Trumbo sign an anti-militarist and pacifist pamphlet - but also a plea for assisted dying - made by upsetting the terrible fate of his main character, the viewer accompanies his ordeal with a voice over. The staging of Trumbo alternates black and white and color and organizes multiple memories and mental journeys of its protagonist, one encounter with Christ, played by Donald Sutherland. Luis Buñuel, a great admirer of the film like Jean Renoir, was also tried to adapt the novel before Trumbo did put himself on stage. Johnny Goes to War, narrowly selected at Cannes in 1971, it obtained the Grand Special Jury Prize and the Prize of the International Critics.
