JOIN PHI SIGMA IOTA, FOREIGN LANGUAGE HONOR SOCIETY! FALL 2014 APPLICATION DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1, 2014. What it is: Phi Sigma Iota recognizes outstanding accomplishment in the study or teaching of any of the academic fields related to foreign language, literature, or culture. These fields include not only modern foreign languages, but also Classics, Linguistics, Philology, Comparative Literature, Bilingual Education, Second Language Acquisition and other interdisciplinary programs with a significant foreign language component. Phi Sigma Iota is the highest academic honor in the field of foreign languages. There are approximately 250 chapters of Phi Sigma Iota at institutions of higher learning in the US, Mexico and France. The eligibility requirements are as follows: Students who have declared a major or minor, must have completed at least one course in a foreign language at the third-year level or its equivalent (fifth semester), have completed 45 semester hours or its equivalent, have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 in the major or minor, and a 3.0 GPA over all (on a 4.0 scale).
