JPL – U15 Hawks 1 Playford City 6 Leaders brush Hawks aside with ease Hawks U15’s were the hosts to league leaders Playford City at the Hawks Nest this Sunday in very cold conditions. A bright start by Jay Devine with a run from central defence to an attacking position looked promising for the Hawks in the opening minutes of the game, but in the following 10 minutes it was clear that the Patriots are top of the league for good reason. On the 4th minute Playford had their first shot at goal but the attempt sailed over the bar, and in the following 5 minutes the visitors won 2 free kicks, both at goal but both cleared by the home side. In the 11th minute a cross by a Playford player from the left wing cruelly hit Devines hand just inside the 18 yard box and a penalty was awarded to the visitors. The spot kick was taken with confidence and although Will Kidman made a valiant attempt to save he was beaten with the Patriots celebrating a one goal advantage. On the 15th minute Playford were awarded a corner kick but Angus Graham was in the right place to clear the incoming ball and ease the pressure. On the 17th minute a great ball was put through to Daniel Moore on the left side and with him looking clear on goal it looked as though an equalizer might be in store, however, the linesman flag was raised for offside and the attack was thwarted. Playford continued to rule the roost with some fine play and had several attempts at the Hawks goal, and on the 36th minute the Playford No8 easily found his way past the Hawks defence and confidently chipped Kidman in goal to increase the lead. Just 3 minutes later more misery was placed on the hosts when another fine run down the left wing followed by a cross to the middle of the box lead to the third goal for Playford. On the stroke of half time Hawks striker Conor McGinley had a shot easily saved by the Playford ‘keeper, the Hawks walked off to the dressing room knowing it would be a mammoth task to salvage anything from the game. The Hawks were the first team to threaten at the start of the second half with Noah Bevan-Parrella forcing a save from the Patriot ‘keeper who just about hung onto the ball without spilling it. Seven minutes into the half saw the first substitution with Cameron Thom being replaced by Sam Bode who was returning to the squad after a few weeks of sickness. Bode took the right back position with Zach Luck moving over to the left where Thom had been playing, but shortly after, Luck was switched again, this time moving to right wing with Lachlan Hodgson taking the left back position. Unfortunately the change to the lineup didn’t help matters when only 3 minutes later a high ball from the left wing was missed by Kidman in goal and the free ball was placed into the net, now giving the visitors a 4 goal advantage. Only a minute later Playford made another run, this time down the right wing, the ball was flicked back for a header that was converted to increase the score line. On the 54th minute mark the first yellow card was shown to a Patriot for a clumsy challenge on Jake Pollard but the Hawks were unable to make anything from the resulting awarded free kick and before too long another run down the right wing by Playford resulted in another cross and headed goal, the score line now at 6-0 in the visitors favour. A goal mouth scramble at the Playford end saw Bevan-Parrella , Jesse Nichols and Moore have attempts at goal but ball control let them all down and the play looked frantic rather than elegant and eventually the Patriots cleared the ball. Sixty three minutes passed before the Hawks had anything to celebrate, Bevan-Parrella won the ball on the left and made a fine run to the corner of the 18 yard box and struck the ball well with his left foot, the ball sailed towards goal and flew into the right side of the opening, deficit reduced by one. The following 8 minutes saw the Hawks have a few half chances to lessen the damage, the best coming from a great cross from Bevan-Parrella in the box with Moore making contact with the ball with his head but he was unable to steer it into the net and it went harmlessly out for a goal kick. Such was the disappointment of the lack lustre performance by the Hawks, the supporters took some delight when a Playford free kick from some 20 yards from the goal line on the right was badly struck and sailed out closer to the corner flag than the goal for a goal kick. The last kick of the game came from a Pollard strike at goal, only to see the ball go wide of the left post which just about summed up the day. Playford however deservedly celebrated the win and all 3 points and it looks hard to see anyone toppling them from winning the title of this league. Final score Hawks 1 Playford 6.
