JULY 10, 2014 – NATIONAL PINA COLADA DAY – NATIONAL CLERIHEW DAY NATIONAL PINA COLADA DAY Celebrate July 10 with a drink in hand, it is National Pina Colada Day. Each year on July 10, this day is recognized by millions across the nation. The Pina Colada is a sweet, rum-based cocktail. Along with the rum, it includes cream of coconut and pineapple juice and is unusually served blended or shaken with ice. ‘Pina Colada’ literally means ‘strained pineapple’, a reference to the freshly pressed and strained pineapple juice used in the drink. There are different claims to the invention of the Pina Colada beginning in 1952 in San Juan, each standing to their story. The truth is that pineapple and rum have been together from the beginning of the distillation of rum. The first written reference to a Pina Colada was in 1922. This recipe however, did not include coconut. On National Pina Colada Day, you do not have to be sitting on a beach or the deck of a cruise ship, you can enjoy a nice tall and cool Pina Colada where ever you are !! In the year 1905, Bently wrote one of his best known which is: Sir Christopher Wren Said, “I am going to dine with some men If anyone calls Say I am designing St. Paul’s. “A clerihew has the following properties: It is biographical and usually whimsical, showing the subject from an unusual point of view; it pokes fun at mostly famous people It has four lines of irregular length and metre (for comic effect) The rhyme structure is AABB; the subject matter and wording are often humorously contrived in order to achieve a rhyme, including the use of phrases in Latin, French and other non-English languages The first line contains, and may consist solely of, the subject’s name.” (Wikipedia) English novelist and humorist, Edmund Clerihew Bently (July 10, 1875 – March 30, 1956), was a 16-year-old student when he thought up the lines for his first ever clerihew.
