JULY 2014 DOG HAIKU OF THE MONTH Master throws the stick With a splash the ripples spread Reaching every shore SHEILA THE ZEN DOGS COMMENTARY: When the stick is thrown into the lake, some dogs like to dive in. Other dogs (like myself) prefer to enter the water at a cautious wading depth and wait for the stick. But heres a secret. While were waiting for the stick to drift to shore, were not actually thinking about the stick. Were thinking about how the ripples from the stick extend into every direction, into every space, reaching all shores from Asia to Europe to Africa to South America to the North Pole. The ripples expand, regardless of the politics, cultures, or religious beliefs of the distant lands they reach. If it werent for gravity, the ripples would extend upward into the heavens and reach the stars. It is all one, interconnected universe. Thats what us dogs are thinking as we wait for the stick.
