Jakhiya - Cleme Viscosa is the spice from the Himalayan region, native to Uttarakhand is a state in the northern part of India. It is often referred to as the Devbhumi ( Land of the Gods). The natives of the state are generally called either Garhwali or Kumaoni depending on their place of origin. Jakhiya is the annually grown naturally from a cultivated crop in the rainfed agriculture. Grown abandoned at the height between 500 - 1500 meters. Jakhiya is very aromatic similar to cumin but unique flavour. The seeds are small, dark brown or black and granular. Resemble to mustard but tiny. Has a deep earthy aroma and tastes lightly pungent. Culinary use is similar to cumin. Dishes like aloo jeera / jakhiya, lentils may be tempered etc. Not very difficult to find but little effort is required. Its worth.
