Jammu................. Voice for Rights, criticized the state government for failing in setting up a mechanism for the protection of rights of children in the state. Voice for Rights an NGO working for the protection of Human Rights in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, today held a press conference here at Press Club and criticized the state government for being insensitive towards the protection of rights of the children. It accused state government of fulfilling its vested interests and ignoring the plight of the common masses. Addressing the press conference, Deepika Singh Rajawat, Founder, Voice for Rights accused state government of not implementing the laws related to the protection of child rights in the state. She said it is unfortunate that even the present government has miserably failed in setting up a protective mechanism for the children in Jammu and Kashmir. Children who are at the receiving end due to number of reasons are victimized easily and there is no check maintained by the government to protect their rights and save them from getting abused, Deepika added. Children who are though considered the future of the nation, but unfortunately are least taken care of, Deepika further added. Taking the serious note of the recent incident in which an eleven year old child was brutally beaten up by a Jammu based businessman namely Kanwar Chabra, She demanded immediate action against the culprit and appealed the authorities not to let the guilty go free. She said that the child was employed by the culprit as domestic help at his residence in the violation of Child Labour Act, 1986. Highlighting the importance of Act, she said that the Act was brought to stop the practice that deprives children of their childhood, and is harmful to their physical and mental development. Victim, Raju (name changed) was severely beaten up by his employer as his father wanted to take him back to home village. Pale yellow and red colored bruises on the child’s buttocks easily explain how cruel was the business who was brutally beating the minor Raju, his domestic help, for the last seven to eight months. Expressing the concern even over the working of Labour Department, she said it is a wake call even for Labour Department which is failing in coming to the rescue of such children. Time is to have an effective mechanism to address such issues and the government has first and foremost role to play. She said it is not the only case that has hit the headlines, but there are number of such children working as domestic help and are exploited by their employers. She has appealed the Labour Commissioner to initiate a drive to rescue such children within a time bound period. Speaking at the press conference, parents of the victim, appealed the Chief Minister of the state to initiate personal probe into the matter. Speaking to the media persons, minor Raju also narrated how he was beaten by Kanwar Chabra for days together. Being bold, he demanded strict action against Kanwar Chabra and his relatives who were involved in employing him at the residence of Kanwar Chabra. Having tears in his eyes he said, there should be law which can save children of my age from getting victimized like this.
